SDSCPA LOSES $250K AFTERSCHOOL GRANT
Good afternoon, SDSCPA families and community!
We were recently informed that San Diego SCPA was not selected to renew the California Department of Education’s After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETs) grant because other school districts and sites showed greater need. For the past five years, this grant has provided SDSCPA with nearly $250k toward student programming--before and after the school day. It has been the primary funding source for our summer intensives, guest artists, high school mainstage productions, after-school Study Tables, and many other critical support programs. The next round of ASSETs grant applications will not take place for another two years.
WE MUST ACT NOW.
In order to continue providing equivalent services and programs-- including not canceling the upcoming summer intensives-- we must begin to find alternative, sustainable funding sources. We must also continue to build revenue to add more high-quality middle school programs. On average, it costs an additional $840 a year, ($70 a month) per student beyond the current district funding model to receive our expected standard of quality art and academic programming. This is considerably less than comparable public art schools across the country that charge families $2500 for student involvement in after-school arts programming.
Now, more than ever, we must work closely with our non-profit partner, Friends of SCPA (FOSCPA), to raise the much-needed funds to fill the gap left from losing the ASSETs grant. If we do not raise $250k by July 1, 2019, we will not be able to continue offering critical free programs to our students, and we will have to charge families for after-school participation in MainStage productions and other after-school activities.
GET INVOLVED. DO YOUR PART.
